SHARON VAN ETTEN ANNOUNCES AUS TOUR

Mistletone has announced the return of Brooklyn singer-songwriter SHARON VAN ETTEN and her stunning band. While in the country for Golden Plains Festival, she will perform at Factory Theatre in Sydney on March 1, The Hi-Fi in Melbourne on March 3, and Brisbane’s The Zoo on March 4. Tickets on sale 9am, Tuesday 28 October.

While most musicians are quite happy to leave the production end of things to someone else, with her fourth studio album Are We There (released April 2014 via Jagjaguwar/Inertia), Van Etten knew it was time to make a record entirely on her terms. She found a kindred spirit in veteran music producer Stewart Lerman whose expertise gave her the freedom to make Are We There the way she imagined.

The album gained radiant praise from media and fans worldwide, including an invitation to perform on The Late Show With David Letterman.

THE CLEAN ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIAN TOUR

What can be said about THE CLEAN? In 1978, they were the seeds of New Zealand DIY and the reason for the founding of the mighty Flying Nun label. A truly magical band who are as vital as ever, The Clean have carved out a big sandbox for everyone to play in. Their influence resonated not only in their homeland but around the world, with followers such as Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth and Pavement. They can be heard loud and clear in the current, worldwide generation of indie bands who have The Clean deeply etched into their DNA.

Touring Australia for the first time in five years, the third time in 25 years, and performing in Perth for the first time ever in their 35 year career, The Clean will play Sydney Festival on January 20, plus headline dates at The Corner in Melbourne on January 22, The Rosemount in Perth on January 23 and The Brightside in Brisbane on January 25.

So what’s the sound? It’s completely theirs but draws on everything from the psychedelic paste of Barrett/early Floyd to vintage Velvets propulsiveness to almost everything else under the sun. They created both full studio sound and lo-fi recordings before, during, and after the various waves of the 4-track revolution, making both recording modes work with no loss of the band’s identity. As far as other influences, you can hear Arthur Lee, Shirley Collins, and the Rolling Stones, among others, but it’s never a kind of forced appropriation; while some bands seem to say, “Look at my record collection,” in the case of The Clean, it’s organic, seamless, and inimitable.

PHILADELPHIA GRAND JURY ANNOUNCE NOVEMBER TOUR

It was late last year that Simon Berkfinger, Dan W Sweat and MC Bad Genius kissed and made up.
As an integral part of rebuilding their often complicated relationships, they decided to tour around the country to celebrate the release of Berkfinger’s debut solo album under the moniker Feelings (as well as to celebrate Dan W Sweat finally graduating).  It was hot, it was sweaty, it was loud, it was chaotic, it was … right.  PHILADELPHIA GRAND JURY were back!

And now Philadelphia Grand Jury are back…. again.  But this time, they’re not just touring around for the hell of it. This time, they’re touring around to raise the funds necessary to record a follow-up album to 2009′s Hope Is For Hopers, tentatively titled Ulterior Motif.

Literally days after the final show of this distressingly short tour, the three on-again, off-again, on-again friends will be packing as many instruments as they can fit into their luggage and flying to Berkfinger’s Golden Retriever Studios in Berlin to record.

JOSH PYKE ADDS SUPPORTS AND ANNOUNCES SECOND NEWCASTLE SHOW

Last week, JOSH PYKE announced the third and final leg of his national Lone Wolf solo tour, adding shows this November/December in Castlemaine, Ballarat, Geelong, Warrnambool, Newcastle, Goulburn, Thirroul, Kincumber and Katoomba. Newcastle has already SOLD OUT and a second date is now on sale at Lizottes on Wednesday 26 November.

Melbourne-via-Warrnambool singer/songwriter and regular Josh Pyke tour partner, Jackson McLaren will open for the Victorian leg of the tour. Jackson McLaren & his band The Triple Threat have been riding the success of their debut full-length Songs To Greet The Dawn, which was released last May. Produced by John Castle (Josh Pyke, Washington, Gossling) the album maps the development of one of Australia’s most exciting young songwriters.

For the NSW leg, Sydney-based Jordan Léser will join the tour, who’s songs are arrows aimed straight to the heart. Her sense of place is evocative, her gift for melody arresting and her compositions reminiscent of her heroines – Kate Bush and Loreena McKennitt. Jordan’s shows are known for their intimate, spellbinding quality – fusing haunting vocals, exquisite musicianship and unforgettable choruses. Leser’s debut single ‘Brother Moon‘ premiered across the country on triple j with a video clip by award winning director Adam Callan (Thundamentals / Birds of Tokyo / Grinspoon)

These shows will be the very last chance to see Josh Pyke’s carefully curated Lone Wolf solo set, and the last shows as part of The Beginning And The End Of Everything album touring. On sale now.

BLACK CAB ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM

After four years, three producers, four studios and fourteen tracks, BLACK CAB have finally completed their fourth studio album, Games Of The XXI Olympiad.  The double length album will be out  November 7.

A special album teaser featuring original footage from the Games and the album’s fist track ‘s available to view now exclusively via Mess + Noise

The album is their first in 5 years, and takes the group further into electronic territories, building on the sound of earlier singles Combat Boots and Sexy Polizei thanks to long-time Cab producer Woody Annison, with additional production by Simon Polinski and ex-Death In Vegas member Tim Holmes.

As with earlier albums such as 2004’s Altamont Diary and 2009’s Australian Music Prize shortlisted Call Signs, the band take a loose concept to create a listening experience that works as a whole. This time it’s the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympic games, where systematically doped up East Germans scooped the medals and Australia went home without a gold. East German shot put gold medallist Andreas Krieger was so steroid enhanced she became a he in 1997. Black Cab like a good story with both winners and losers.
